Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection or ICSI is an in-vitro fertilization method in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. ICSI is done in addition to other in vitro fertilization methods to take out often several oocytes from a woman.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI is commonly used to deal with male infertility problems and also where eggs cannot readily be penetrated by sperm.
ICSI can be used in teratozoospermia (sperm with abnormal morphology that affects fertility in males) because once the egg is fertilized, unnatural sperm morphology does not look to influence blastocyst development. Even with severe teratozoospermia, in lab few sperm cells that have a “normal” morphology can be detected leading to the optimal success rate.
